Students Earn Top Awards at 2013 FCCLA National Leadership Conference

Students from Penta Career Center and several of its satellite programs recently earned top awards at the 2013 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee July 7-11, 2013. Each student winner received a medal for their accomplishments.

Thirteen students in Penta’s Early Childhood Education program earned either a gold or silver award during the competition. Nine students from the Penta/Anthony Wayne Teaching Professions program earned gold or silver awards. In addition, three students who are enrolled in Penta’s Family and Consumer Sciences programs (at the middle school level) in the Anthony Wayne and Benton-Carroll-Salem school districts earned gold awards.

Gold award winners from the Early Childhood Education program included: Mariah Bruin (Perrysburg) and Katherine Caudill (Springfield) both for the Interpersonal Communications contest; Abbey Burnworth (Oak Harbor) and Elisa Reyes (Eastwood) for the Focus on Children contest; Miah Abdo (Lake), Bailey Birch (Northwood) and Chelsea Elam (Lake) all for the Illustrated Talk contest; and Katelyn Long (Perrysburg) and Ashley Rodriguez (Springfield) both for the National Programs in Action contest.

Silver award winners from the Early Childhood Education program included: Justine Tolles (Otsego) for the Leadership contest; and Courtney Blevins (Springfield), Virginia Clark (Maumee) and Holly Wagner (Anthony Wayne) all for the Applied Technology contest.
Gold award winners from the Penta/Anthony Wayne Teaching Professions program included: Hailie Smith and Brooke Heuerman for the No Kid Hungry® National Outreach contest (they also were recognized with a trophy for raising the most money in the United States for their project); Emily Witte for the Nutrition and Wellness contest; and Laurel Underwood for the Virtual Poster contest.

Also, the following Teaching Professions students earned silver awards at the national conference: Tyler Deye and Grant Fiock for the Digital Stories for Change contest; and Gabrielle Gunther, Tess Hannan and Megan Malak, all for Environmental Ambassador contest.

In addition, three middle school students in Penta’s Family and Consumer Sciences programs in the Benton-Carroll-Salem and Anthony Wayne school districts earned gold awards at the 2013 FCCLA National Leadership Conference. The students included: Kadence Crum and Anna Dedes, both 7th graders at Oak Harbor Middle School, for the Chapter Service Display Team contest; and Brady Schofield, a 7th grader at Anthony Wayne Junior High, for the Nutrition and Wellness contest.

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has over 200,000 members and over 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since it was founded in 1945.
